Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said that after his party returns to power and implements promises made during the campaign, city residents will save ₹10,000 monthly over the ₹25,000 they save through the existing schemes. “But if the BJP comes to power, all the ongoing schemes will be terminated, and every family will bear an extra burden of ₹25,000 every month,” he added.

“We have improved schools so much that one child’s education saves a family about ₹5,000 a month. For two children, that’s a saving of ₹10,000. Add ₹5,000 saved from subsidy on electricity bills, ₹5,000 through free healthcare, ₹2,500 through free bus rides, and ₹2,000 from water bills. It adds up to ₹25,000 each month,” he said while campaigning for party candidate B.B. Tyagi, who is contesting against sitting BJP MLA Abhay Verma from east Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar.

“If AAP returns to power, new initiatives will add another ₹10,000 to people’s savings,” he added.

The former Chief Minister also told slum dwellers that if they vote for the BJP, then “their slums will be raised within a year”.

About 100 metres away from the stage, standing next to open drains, Amit Kumar, 45, said, “See the state of sewerage. When it rains, the sewers overflow and I cannot even step out of my house.” Mr. Kumar said he is looking for development more than cash transfer schemes.

At a nearby vegetable cart, Madhu Dikshit, 52, remarked that all politicians are alike. “These days, they come with folded hands, but you won’t see them after the election.” She said she is satisfied with the free water, electricity, and bus ride schemes.

Bintu Jaiswal, 34, who also pushes a cart, said people are suffering from the constant fight between AAP and the Lieutenant-Governor.

“The public wants development,” he said.
