A day after filing a bail plea to contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly election, activist Sharjeel Imam on Tuesday (October 14, 2025) withdrew the same from a Delhi court.

Advocate Ahmad Ibrahim, counsel representing Mr. Imam, submitted in the court of Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Sameer Bajpai that his client’s regular bail plea was pending before the Supreme Court, and so the top court would be the ‘proper’ forum to file the plea for interim relief as well.

The court allowed the withdrawal request filed by the advocate.

Mr. Imam, who has been lodged in the Tihar jail for over five years, had filed the interim bail application in the court on Monday. The plea stated that he wanted to contest the Bihar elections as an Independent candidate. The Delhi Police have invoked the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) against Imam in the Delhi riots case.

The activist has stated that there is no one in his family or among his friends to take care of and make arrangements for his nomination and campaign for the elections. His younger brother is taking care of his ailing mother and providing for the family, Mr. Imam said.

He had sought bail from October 15 to October 29 as the process of filing nomination papers for the 18th Bihar Legislative Assembly election ends on October 20.

Mr. Imam was denied regular bail in the Delhi riots case by the Delhi High Court last month.
