Celebrating the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) thumping victory in the Delhi Assembly elections on Saturday (February 8, 2025), Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the party’s senior leadership and workers at the BJP’s national headquarters here.

Taking a jibe at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which conceded defeat earlier in the day, he said, “AAP came with promise to usher in politics of change but turned out to be the most dishonest party.”

Congratulating the BJP, the Prime Minister, who had addressed four election rallies in the national capital, said, “For the first time since Independence, the BJP will now have governments in Delhi and all adjoining States.”

Thanking voters for the mandate, he said, “People of Delhi today have enthusiasm and satisfaction. There is relief of liberating Delhi from ‘AAP-da’. I thank all Delhiites for entrusting their faith in Modi’s guarantee.”

He said that with the BJP in power, “Delhi will be transformed into a modern city”. “Our focus will be on mobility, infrastructure and providing new opportunities to the youth,” he said. He reaffirmed his commitment to restoring the Yamuna River.

Mr. Modi has been referring to the AAP government as an ‘AAP-da’ (disaster in Hindi) in his rallies. “Now Delhi’s double-engine government will ensure development at double speed. It is a historic win and not a usual victory as the people of Delhi have shown the door to ‘AAP-da’. Delhi has become Aapda-mukt,” he said.

“The politics of protests, confrontation and administrative uncertainty have caused great harm to the people of Delhi. Today, all you Delhiites have removed a major obstacle in the development of Delhi by removing the AAP-da,” Mr. Modi said.

Listing the corruption charges against AAP leaders, the Prime Minister said, AAP has been “consumed by corruption”. “This is the only party in the country whose Chief Minister and Ministers have gone to jail on corruption charges. Those who once certified themselves as honest and labelled others as corrupt have been exposed as the real culprits. This was a massive betrayal of Delhi’s trust. But now, Delhi’s verdict is in,” he said.

Mr. Modi said that in the very first Assembly session, the CAG report on Delhi, which the AAP government had not tabled, would be presented in the House.

Attacking the Congress, which drew a blank, he said, “In Delhi’s elections, Congress scored a double hat-trick of zeroes. The country’s oldest party has failed to open its account in the national capital for six consecutive elections. Earlier, I said that Congress had become a parasitic party. It does not just sink itself, it takes its allies down with it.”
