Bihar SIR: Documents of over 98% electors received, says Election Commission of India

Election Commission of India said documents of 98.2% electors have already been received with eight more days left for people to file claims and objections to the draft electoral roll of Bihar published as part of the intensive revision of voters’ list.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Sunday (August 24, 2025) that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar is on schedule even as the Opposition intensified protests against it.

The poll body said it has received documents from 98.2% of the 7.24 crore electors in the State in 60 days. The remaining 1.8% voters have eight days to submit the requisite documents that were not provided during enumeration, and to rectify mistakes in the draft electoral rolls published on August 1. The ECI said that 1.64% electors submitted documents per day.

The poll panel said the Electoral Registration Officers (ERO) and the Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AERO) will take a final call on the claims and objections received, and they will complete the verification of “eligibility documents” by September 25. The final electoral rolls will be published on September 30, the poll body said in a statement.

The SIR was done between June 24 and July 25. Claims and objections, along with documents, can be submitted till September 1.

The poll panel appreciated the efforts by the Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar, District Election Officers of all 38 districts, 243 EROs, 2,976 AEROs, 90,712 Booth Level Officers, lakhs of volunteers and field representatives of all the 12 major political parties, and their 1.6 lakh Booth Level Agents.

“The exercise to collect their documents with the help of BLOs and volunteers is going on. Thus, just like the collection of enumeration forms, work related to the collection of documents is also likely to be completed before time,” the release said, adding that verification of documents is also being done concurrently by EROs and AEROs.

The poll body said that out of 7.24 crore electors in the draft rolls, only 0.16% of the voters have filed claims and objections so far. “10 from the BLAs of 12 recognised political parties in Bihar, NIL by persons who are not electors of that Assembly Constituency and 1,21,143 by electors within their Assembly Constituency,” the press note said.
